and Staphylococcus aureus (Anderson et al., 1958); Brettanomyces schanderlii (Nelson et al., 1960), and the mold Absidia orchidis. The tendency of all microorganisms to contain similar amounts of these amino acids, coupled with the unlikely possibility of altering the amino acid composition of integral cell proteins, indicates that the use of microorganisms as concentrated sources of specific essential amino acids may be limited to those organisms which also produce amino acids extracellularly. The formation of such uncombined amino acids is more amenable to modification than is the formation of constitutive cellular amino acids. Further study of those organisms which form the greatest amounts of cellular amino acids may disclose strains which liberate the desired amino acids extracellularly. Such an organism would make a particularly valuable source of amino acids for feed supplementation.

Phenotypic and genotypic diversity of dominant lactic acid bacteria isolated from traditional yoghurts produced by tribes of Iran

Morphological, biochemical and molecular characteristics were studied to identify dominant lactic acid bacteria (LAB), isolated from traditional yoghurts produced by tribes of Iran. From 60 yoghurt samples, a total of 137 LAB isolates were determined, in which 66 and 71 were identified as lactic acid cocci and bacilli, respectively. Biochemical tests showed the occurrence of 9.76% mesophilic ho...

Antimicrobial Effect of Lactic Acid Bacteria against Common Pathogenic Bacteria

Abstract       Background and Objective: Probiotics are living microorganisms that have beneficial effects on the health of digestive system. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial ability of acidic and neutral supernatants (culture supernatant) of lactic acid bacteria against common bacterial pathogens.        Meth...

Product labeling of glucose-1-C14 fermentation by homofermentative and heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria.

Lactobacillus casei, a homofermentative lactic acid bacterium, was shown by Gibbs et al. (1950) to ferment glucose-i-C4 to products labeled as predicted for the classical EmbdenMeyerhof glycolytic scheme, whereas Leuconostoc mesenteroides strain 39, a heterofermentative lactic acid coccus, gave product labeling incompatible with an Embden-Meyerhof pathway and was interpreted as indicative of th...

Nutrient Requirements of Butyric Acid-Butyl Alcohol Bacteria.

Preliminary investigations have shown that Clostridium acetobutylicum and related butyric-acid butyl-alcohol bacteria, fail to develop in a synthetic medium containing only ammonium sulphate, inorganic salts and glucose. These results suggest that perhaps the organisms require complex nitrogen compounds or some specific growth factor. Wood, Tatum and Peterson (1937), Wood, Andersen and Werkman ...

A differential medium for the enumeration of homofermentative and heterofermentative lactic Acid bacteria.

A medium was developed for the differential enumeration of homofermentative and heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria. Essential components of the medium included fructose (14 mM), KH(2)PO(4) (18 mM), bromcresol green (as a pH indicator), and other nutrients to support growth. In agar medium, homofermentative colonies were blue to green, while heterofermentative colonies remained white. A tot...
